The Vagabond bike was born for a desire to get further off the beaten track. Sophie and Nathan, who left home in England and France in 2016 to travel by bike explain:
"We were travelling down South America and the further we got into the Andes, the more appealling the off road pistes became. We began to feel limited by our classic touring bikes with a pannier set up, so we contacted Darron with a new project in mind. We wanted a sturdy reliable bicycle, comfortable enough to go the distance, but also capable of tackling the rougher pistes and single tracks whilst bearing a load.
With Sven's exsisting Pathfinder model as a reference, a few modifications were made to fit our specifications. Everything on our bikes is designed for durability, low maintenance, self efficiency and long distance comfort.
The Vagabond has a rigid frame made from Reynolds steel tubing and is capable of running up to 2.8" tyres for extra tread and suspension. Eyelets allow for load carrying cages in the frame and the fork, as well as the option of a front and rear track.
The Rohloff speed hub with fourteen internal gears is a great low maintenance and reliable solution to travelling on muddy and dusty surfaces, in places where parts like derailleurs can be hard to come by.
A Jones H bar for control and a variety of positions; disc brakes reliable in all conditions; a Sinewave dynamo hub connecting to an efficient USB charger, and a leather Brooks saddle for the final 'Made in England' flourish (and unbeatable comfort!); complete the solid set up ready to explore whatever paths we find ourselves on.
Putting the Bikes to the test in New Zealand
Just a couple of months after our first conversation with Darron, our two handmade bikes were shipped from Dorset in the UK to the opposite side of the World. We recieved them in Auckland ready to test them out on the infamous NZ trails before heading off to Asia.
After a month of biking on incredibly varied terrain; from gravel to single track mountain bike trails to tarmac road, we were blown away by the versatility and comfort of the bikes. And we seem to turn heads wherever we go!
